Dervish: a strange name for a group of five young musicians from north-west Ireland. The name was chosen as a symbol of music's entrancement. Formed in 1989, the group now has seven members. After signing a contract with an American record company, they rapidly climbed to fame. A series of American tours followed and they also took part in some of the great festivals on the other side of the Atlantic, including San Francisco. |
The quality of their music and their innovative style led to their nomination for an important music award, which they carried off in triumph. The group, which has now made six records, has many assets, including some outstanding instrumentalists and the remarkable voice of Cathy Jordan. Dervish could be described as the third generation of the Irish music revival, the " grandchildren " of The Chieftains. And as one journalist and specialist in British traditional music, put it: " Dervish are simply brilliant! ". |
